‘artist statement’
step by step, i uncover a time filled with dense layers of information, between which there is little room to understand what happened once and for all. but if you hold your breath and penetrate the changing structure of memory, you can transform from an observer into a participant who has the power to blur the boundaries between the past and the future, restoring the interrupted dialogue of history, in which there is so much that should not be forgotten.
i was born and raised in buryatia. a point on the map allows one to feel one's materiality in space — to fix one's position, determine one's direction, and begin a journey in search of identity. i was born
and raised in buryatia, but jewish blood flows through my veins. the cultural memory of my people turns my gaze back:
i turn my face to the completed events of history and see the unreal images of eyewitnesses. in me,
as in a ‘witness’ to the present, the ephemeral past acquires material reality.
i create characters — in portraits that look straight into your eyes from the canvas, in cute and helpless dolls,
in pensive sculptures. they are emphatically decorative, they flicker between the truth and fiction of history, theatre
and life, between a parodic and serious view of the world. snatched from the flow of time, they hang
in timelessness, in an eternal transitional state, where their encounter with the viewer takes place. bright and open, they belong to no one: are they free or lost? in their eyes, turned
towards the viewer, lies all the tension of the moment, the one in which the only possibility of understanding is hidden,
the encounter we so eagerly await when we look to the past in search of ourselves.
